Market Research
What we looked for:
Different forms of platforms
- Landing Page
- Relationship between posts' presentation style & platform culture
- How does the design inform the type of conversations & interactions on the platform, comment section, and overall culture?
Most platforms are content focused and a few are user reaction focused
Content Focused
- Users need to perform an additional action to view comments & replies
- Strips/box format used to present content
- Texts & images have a similar hierarchy
- Most have a thumbnail of image, title, and text
Content + Reaction Focused
- Comments directly underneath the post, no additional action needed to see comments
- Need additional action to see replies to the comments
-> Results in a comment section dominated by individual opinions and likes rather than deeper conversations.
Reaction Focused
- No action needed to see replies to comments/comment threads.
- The visual hierarchy of comments emphasizes and encourages replies to previous comments (not only are replies to the original comment encouraged, but replies to other replies are also encouraged).
-> Result in conversation threads where each reply builds on the other. Often times one person would start a sentence and others would finish it.
Others
- Masonry or gallery format creates an Image-focused platform.
- Tinder uses a unique format that focuses the viewers' attention on one piece of content at a time. Its individual swiped cards, which take up the whole screen, emphasize the quality rather than the quantity of the content.
Conclusion
Debate - Reaction & Interaction Focused
Our app is a debate app, therefore:
- It focuses on the quality of the content rather than quantity. The topic & the richness of the comment section are what attract users.
-> Present posts one at a time rather than multiple posts on one screen.
- Encourages interactions (e.g. replies to comments).
-> Show voting on the same page as the content. Users shouldn't require additional actions to view comments and their replies.
- Visually displays distinct standpoints of a topic which is not a feature found on most platforms.
->Easy and clear visualization
RISD SPACE DESIGN
President
Sebastian Boal (he/him/his)
Hi! My name is Sebastian Boal. I am the RISD Space Design Club President, Senior in ID. I manage club connections, help secure resources for challenges, coordinate leadership, and step in to assist challenges when needed. I currently am helping co-lead the Big Idea Challenge with Hannah Skye Dunnigan and Anthony Capobianco (at BSE). We will be presenting our prototype to NASA on Nov 17th which is exciting!
I have been with this club since 2019. I was inspired to help RSD back on its feet after we couldn't compete in the 2020 rover challenge due to the pandemic, I didn't want to see the club be forgotten. I was fortunate enough to intern at NASA this last summer, and I am happy to say the work we do as a club is pretty close to the industrial design work they do there. So you guys are in the right place.
Thanks, Sebastian Boal
Election Candidates:
Co-Chair - Challenge/Technical Advisor
Henry Zhang (he/him/his)
I have strong fabrication skills, and my great learning ability will allow me to conduct research quickly and accurately. I believe that my interdisciplinary studies of the sciences -- and design -- would give better insights into creative problem-solving solutions in space, along with my critical thinking.
Hannah Skye Dunnigan (she/her/hers)
My name is Hannah Skye and I use she/hers. I am a fourth-year study Industrial Design and Economics. My roles to date in RISD Space Design include project lead for the Micro-g challenge, project co-lead for Big Idea Challenge, and senior member of the VP board. I do not intend to lead any challenges this year, but instead, contribute to other challenges where needed and in an advising capacity.
On both projects, I previously led and co-led I also served as prototyping and design lead. I have additional working metals fabrication experience machining walker chassis. I think my prototyping experience, as well as my out-of-the-box problem-solving approach, will make me a good fit for the Technical advisor position.
Chaeri Park (she/her/hers)
Hi! I am a senior in ID after my gap year due to the pandemic. I spent my time as a brand manager in a company based in Seoul during my gap year. Prior to that, as an intern in charge of creating assets for Supercell Korea social media. I owned the Korean fashion brand MIXXMIX instagram account as well. My interest is in materials. I have spent my time at RISD studying biomaterials, smart materials, and other fabrication methods for different materials. Have been trained in a number of digital tools at Co-Works, and am a current monitor at CAD lab. I took physics and chemistry classes as liberals.
Bowen Zhou (she/her/hers)
Hey guys! I’m Bowen!
Fun fact: I like training my fish to jump. Who’s a good boy? Who’s a good boy?
Being a part of this club has been one of the most exciting highlights of my past year! I loved working with others in both Micro-g and Big Idea, being a VP, co-leading our SUITS and outreach team, and most importantly, laughing and tackling all of these challenges with the amazing people here. It is imperative to me that everyone feels their importance to the team, that anyone here can say with confidence what they are doing is of great value, and that their contributions matter.
Laugh with me! Jump through challenges with me! Find purpose in work with me! If you feel this same energy as I do, vote for me!
Felix Arwen (he/him/his)
Hey everyone! I am Felix and I’m a junior in ID. I’ve been in the Space design club for over a year now and have participated in every challenge that we have competed in since. I dedicate a lot of effort to this club and will continue to do so for the rest of my time here at RISD. My role has often been to fact-check and keep the scope of these challenges in a realistic direction. I have lots of technical experience in both fabrication and the sciences related to space. I have taken Metals II and Metal fabrication and know how to machine and weld. I work more than 35 hours a week as a monitor in both the metal and wood shops and you’ve likely seen me in there. I have lots of experience helping others develop skills and problem solve.
Anyone who knows me would be able to attest to my knowledge of both fabrication and space. I spend a large part of my free time absorbing information from a variety of sources. I have been known to read in-depth all 300 pages of NASA research papers and I have hours and hours of PBS space-time and This Old Tony under my belt (if you know what those are you’ll understand their relevance). I studied astrophysics and took all three AP physics exams in high school. I nearly dedicated my career to astronomy and physics (as my twin brother is currently doing).
I feel like the technical advisor role is made for me and I would be honored to be able to serve the club in this elevated capacity. Thank you for your consideration!
Andrew Storck (he/him/his)
After almost a decade serving multiple roles in the United States Air Force as a Non commissioned officer, I completed a bachelor’s of arts in ceramics at The Pennsylvania State University. I have also completed a number of public art projects and started a small-scale manufacturing operation in my private studio space. I am currently pursuing a master’s of fine arts in sculpture here at RISD.
These areas of art have allowed me to explore many technical and advanced forms of traditional and digital fabrication. Thanks to my years in the military I have an in-depth knowledge of air vehicles, communicating between engineers and technicians, and leading a team through mission-oriented tasks. I am especially experienced in leading a team under high-pressure situations and tight deadlines while safely achieving our objectives, for these reasons I believe I am a great fit for the role of technical advisor. I look forward to meeting everyone in the club and working together on the many exciting planned projects.
Davis Smith (he/him/his)
I would like to become the Technical Advisor because I live and breathe for making. From growing up doing construction with my dad, to coming to RISD and having a variety of shop classes under my belt such as metal fabrication, wood II, Solid-works, Intro to Furniture, Digital Ceramics, etc. I am passionate about creating with my hands while applying a high level of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and optimal efficiency. Absolutely obsessed with learning new skills, in my free time I am either watching videos about making that expand my knowledge base (I get laughed at for waking up to drink coffee and watch welding videos) or working on my vintage Honda motorcycle that I restored from a junkyard. Above all, I love being able to share what knowledge I have to assist my peers.
Outreach Coordinator
Jessica Young (she/her/hers)
Hello hello! I’m Jess and I am a junior in Industrial Design. I’ve been a part of RISD Space Design since last fall (2020). Some projects I have been involved in are SUITS (graphics lead & a researcher/designer for the navigation subsection) and Micro-G (a designer). I also designed the space dust chinchilla logo for the Big Idea team.
With communication, I am very type-A schedule-based, which has helped me stay on top of my studios, extracurriculars, and small business, as well as any incoming messages and notifications. Communication has always been a consistent practice in my life, especially this semester, as one of my current classes assigns group projects every week where I have had to reach out to quite a lot of people to conduct user interviews with. This has strengthened my team and outreach communication skills on a day-to-day basis. I also run a relatively large Etsy shop where I provide around-the-clock customer service. I sell stickers, and have made other merchandise before as well (charms, prints, etc), so I’m well versed in the merch industry. As I know the outreach lead would work with the club tailor and graphics officer, this can prove useful as I could send them information on places to make the merchandise.
Last year, we started considering the club’s overall brand identity, with special consideration for newsletters, specific project differences, and outreach documents. A new school year means a new opportunity to pick up where we last left off. I had a blast working on this last semester, and would really like to continue to play a part in this aspect of the club.
One last flex: in terms of writing, I was accepted into and attended one of the top three most prestigious writing camps (yea, I know. Nerd.). From that experience, I am able to effectively apply what I learned to write persuasive emails for recruitment and outreach purposes. Thank you for your consideration! :-)

Santiago Alvarado (he/him/his)
Hey, I'm Santi! I feel I would be the best fit for this position because I have experience in planning and organizing events campus-wide. I love sharing opportunities and am passionate about creating community, especially bringing people into a new experience that they have yet to explore. Our Space Design team has so much potential for student engagement and involvement! I think I'm the best fit for outreach and creating a strong identity of how interstellar we truly are with my passion, persistence, and enthusiasm!
Graphic Design Officer
Leo Baek (he/him/his)
Hey guys my name is Leo (he/him/his) and I'm a sophomore in the RISD Industrial Design program. I applied for a graphic officer position in the RSD club, because I strongly believed that there is no other club like RISD Space Design club, where I could pursue my passion of making digital arts, while also being involved with the members of the club community to learn more about the subject I have been passionate about for a very long time, which is space exploration. I still remember, as a little kid I made imaginary spaceships out of my legos and, of course, when I got older to prepare to go to college, I made a high school portfolio entirely about outer space. I kept this passion with me ever since and, during my years in RISD, I always dreamed of myself in the future working along with any organizations involved with advancements in space technology.
My vision as a graphic design officer in the club is to not only lead the team to make visually striking images and posters but also to encourage the team to experiment with other digital mediums, such as motion graphics and videos to deliver the messages of the NASA club in the most effective way to other students. In which, I can confidently speak that I have the skills set and am ready to accomplish my vision as the leader in this position.
I already have gotten the chance to speak to some of the members in the club, and I was truly inspired by how much hard work and dedication they put into the club already. I'm willing to commit 100% to the success of the NASA club community, not just for my love of digital works, but also for space is a topic of my dream and passion.
Human Resource Counselor
Jooyoun Kang (she/her/hers)
Hi team! My name is Jooyoun and I'm a sophomore in ID.
Creating a safe space for everyone is my huge passion! I have been working as a Resident Advisor (shout out to 15 West!!), and I have experience in creating a welcoming atmosphere, promoting inclusion, and mitigating arising conflicts within the community. I can serve as a resource for inclusion, and I can also connect with other resources in RISD. Most importantly, I want all of us to have a great time here, and I'll do my best for the goal! It would be my pleasure if I could work as a human resources counselor. :)
